Prescription guide
A short explanation of what the numbers on your prescription mean, and the three ways you can send yours to us when ordering prescription lenses.
Please enter the prescription exactly as provided by your optometrist. Eye Shop Optician may contact you to confirm prescription details before preparing the order.
What the values mean
- SPH (Sphere)
- The main lens power, in dioptres. A minus value corrects short-sightedness, a plus value corrects long-sightedness.
- CYL (Cylinder)
- The extra power needed for astigmatism. It may be blank if you have none.
- AXIS
- A number from 0 to 180 that tells us the orientation of the cylinder correction. It only appears when there is a CYL value.
- ADD
- Additional reading power, used for bifocal, trifocal and progressive lenses.
- PD (Pupillary Distance)
- The distance between the centres of your pupils, in millimetres. It positions the lens correctly in the frame.
- OD / OS
- OD is the right eye, OS is the left eye. Some prescriptions write R and L instead.
Three ways to send us your prescription
- 1Enter it manuallyType the values from your prescription into the form on the product page. Separate fields are provided for each eye.
- 2Upload itAttach a photo or PDF of the prescription your optometrist gave you (JPG, PNG or PDF, up to 5 MB). It is stored privately and seen only by our staff.
- 3Send it later on WhatsAppPlace your order first and send us the prescription in the chat. We will contact you before preparing your lenses.
How we handle your prescription
- Prescription details are attached to your order and are visible only to Eye Shop Optician staff.
- Uploaded files are stored privately. They have no public web address and are never listed publicly.
- We never include prescription details or file links in a WhatsApp message or in a web address.
- We do not interpret, correct or give medical advice on your prescription — we prepare lenses exactly as written.
